Practicing Mindfulness

Mindful Monday: If not now, WHEN?

Welcome to Mindful Monday!

My goal is to post a quote, photo or an experience every Monday that can be used to pave a positive path for the week ahead. (say that 3 times fast, pave a positive path, ha!)

I grew up in a big sports family. My dad (aka Coach) taught us how using motivational quotes can build confidence and get you into the right mindset for the big game. (i.e. ‘Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.’ – Michael Jordan) These affirmations are handy in our day to day lives as well!

“If not now,when?”

This quote is actually only a portion of the original from Hillel the elder, a well known Hebrew rabbi(110BC-10AD). “If I am not for myself who is for me? And being for my own self, what am ‘I’? And if not now, when?” (Pirke Avot I.14)

Hillel the elder

Through mindfulness I have found I tell myself to “wait for a better time” all too often. Thats when this quote popped into my head.

“I’ll wait until Wyatt has had his nap” or “I’ll wait until this weekend”. Then the nap will be over or the weekend will arrive and I have a million other excuses why it’s not a good time. And truth is, the present moment is all we have! So what am I waiting for??

Since I have brought this to light I am determined to squash the anxieties holding me back. To accomplish this, I’ve done three things.

  1. I’ve made ‘wait‘ my trigger word. This means whenever I say it, I will take a moment to look at the situation and determine if it is necessary or if I am making excuses.
  2. Tell a family member or close friend (or both!) so they can give me a little nudge if I forget
  3. Create a motivational, visual reminder and put it in a place that will be seen multiple times a day. I personally love using the background and lock screen on my phone! You could also stick a post it note on your mirrors or in your car!

I would like to encourage you to take a slow steady breath and come into the present moment. This moment is all we have, the future is not promised. What have you been putting on the back burner? Say it out loud, write it down, tell a friend and shine some light on whatever it is, today! This day is a gift and by living mindfully moment to moment we are able to reach our full potential. You can do it!

Here I have a couple photos with this quote! These should fit almost any phone background or lock screen, please feel free to use them!
